Severe Thunderstorm Threat

March 25, 2007
--As of Sunday evening, local time, thunderstorms are back--to the Arabian Peninsula, that is. Infrared full-disk satellite imagery from the IMD...
...shows `enhanced` (light and thus cold and high) cloud tops trending from NE Africa through Arabia to Iran. This is indeed the direction of flow for winds aloft, which anchor the sub-tropical jet stream. Of interest are the whitest tops in a north-south streak from the Najd south to the highlands of SW Yemen (southernmost Arabia). These have fanned out from earlier thunderstorms that billowed in the afternoon warmth along the highland spine striking from Ta`if, KSA, to Ta`izz, Yemen. (An aside: through a process that has been dubed `high-level heat source`, convective thunderstorms often erupt first over highlands and the fertility of this corner of Arabia bespeaks the much higher frequency of thunderstorms here compared to nearby southern Arabia). Meantime, a scattering of thunderstorms have also erupted late Sunday along a corridor between the mid Red Sea and the Gulf--and this is roughly the corridor that bears watching for the next two to three days.
--Underpinnings of the present weather and that of the first half of next week (at least) is a rather strong sub-tropical jet stream striking out of Egypt, over the northern half of Arabia and thence east-northeast to the middle of Iran. The little jog to the left (north) of this wind stream over Arabia is also key to both a moistening of the atmosphere and the instigation of rising motion, which is essential in breeding thunderstorms.
--As already indicated, the first thunderstorms have already broken out as of late Sunday, local time. And the outbreak will last through Wednesday, if not Thursday, given what I see right now. I shall post two maps showing how the atmosphere is likely to behave near the time of the heaviest thunderstorms. The 500 millibar pressure field (as of Tuesday, 1200 hours GMT)...
...shows well the `left turn` in the lines of constant height (which are approximately the wind direction of the eastward trending jet stream) right over Arabia. Especially where the lines straighten (near the Mideast Gulf), thunderstorms should be favored.
Here is what the resulting rainfall, accumulated over 24 hours ended Tuesday, 1200 hours GMT:
This is `simulated` rainfall and only a rough approximation of what will likely happen. But it is rather clear that potential is for heavy, convective rainfall. As a forecaster with some experience dealing with situations akin to this one, the idea of strong thunderstorms seems sound. To see the full sequence of GFS numerical forecast plots, see the COLA site.
So when and where will this big outbreak happen. Monday through Tuesday will have the highest coverage, I believe, of strong to sever thunderstorms over Arabia (from the Najd east to the Gulf, and mostly along or north of the 25th parallel, which runs through Qatar). Included here will be SE Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain together with a southwest-northeast corridor through Iran. It remains to be see how busy thunderstorms will be over the Gulf area Wednesday into Thursday, though it seems likely that there will be further rains and storms.
In this part of the world, strong to severe thunderstorms imply damaging winds up to and even exceeding minimal hurricane strength (64 knots, or 120 kph). Along with high winds comes fearsome dust storms, though these would tend to be short-lived. Torrential, flooding downpours yielding 1-2 inches, or 25-50 mm, within an hour or two. Also hailstones big enough to do damage. Exactly where and when these will happen, if indeed they do, is well beyond my ability to say.
