Francesco Totti celebrated his 30th birthday with a goal against Valencia, but Roma still lost 2-1 at the Mestalla.
The Giallorossi got off to a great start in the Champions League, hammering Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0, but were without the injured Rodrigo Taddei, Amantino Mancini and Mirko Vucinic for this trip to Spain. Francesco Totti celebrated his 30th birthday at the Mestalla.
Valencia, playing without the suspended Joaquin, had an aggressive start and Christian Panucci cleared a dangerous Roberto header from a corner kick, but the veteran then set up Simone Perrotta, who nodded just past the post.
Marco Cassetti also went close for the visitors, combining with Perrotta before drilling a right-foot finish inches wide of the target. Santiago Canizares had to get down well to palm out a Perrotta header from another Panucci cross.
But it was the Spaniards who broke through after 13 minutes. Roma's defence fell asleep and Miguel Angel Angulo was left far too much space to slam David Villa's cut-back into the far corner on the volley.
Roma were furious soon after when Max Tonetto's tearing run and cross was not dealt with and ex-Parma man Emiliano Moretti brought down Cassetti with what can only be described as a rugby tackle, wrapping his arms round the player's legs.
The referee at first did not award the penalty, but after consulting with his linesman, the decision was inevitable, although Moretti was spared a dismissal or yellow card for stopping a clear scoring opportunity. Totti stepped up and buried the spot-kick into the far corner, sending Canizares the wrong way for a perfect birthday present.
Villa also wanted a spot-kick, but it was his first touch that let him down and he lost his balance.
The striker made up for it soon after, as Moretti shrugged off a challenge and rolled his through ball across to Villa, who placed a precise low finish into the near corner.
It was end to end stuff and Totti set up David Pizarro for a screamer of a strike that was somehow palmed over the bar by Canizares with a reaction save.
Alexander Doni was lucky to escape unpunished after an ambitious pass to his defenders was intercepted, while David Albelda was booked for a very late tackle on Pizarro.
Cristian Chivu did well to close down Villa as he sprinted towards Doni, while Edu drilled a free kick across the face of goal from a tight angle.
Daniele De Rossi fell asleep in midfield and Villa's snapshot from the D was inches past the upright.
Vincenzo Montella came on for Alberto Aquilani at the break, but Doni had to smother a deflected Angulo effort and Villa hit the side-netting after skipping past a defender.
Vicente tried to roll in to the centre for Fernando Morientes, but he might've been wiser to shoot from that position. From the resulting corner there were penalty appeals, but Matteo Ferrari was trying to get out of the way when the ball clipped his elbow.
Luciano Spalletti really went for it in the final 25 minutes, throwing on teenage striker Stefano Okaka Chuka for Cassetti.
Villa pounced on a loose ball just inside the area and hesitated before getting his shot away, allowing Cristian Chivu to get back for a crucial tackle.
Totti blasted a free kick right into the wall, then Canizares rushed out to the corner flag and Montella kept the ball in play, but a lucky ricochet spared the goalkeeper's blushes.
Ferrari went into the book for scything down substitute David Silva, then Valencia had a double opportunity with Angulo's wayward shot turning into an assist for Morientes, but Doni made a crucial save.
Ayala, who had already been booked, was extremely fortunate not to be sent off for a clumsy tackle on Okaka, but the referee only carded De Rossi for his protests.
Doni pushed a long-range Vicente effort round the post and Totti couldn't keep his shot on target from the edge of the box.
