Aragones keen to take up Spain challenge
28 June 2004
by Reuters
Real Mallorca boss Luis Aragones has thrown his hat into the ring as a possible candidate to succeed Inaki Saez as Spain coach.
"I'm really proud that people are talking about the possibility of taking over as the national team coach," the 65-year-old was quoted as saying by Spanish website Libredirecto.com on Monday.
"I think my time has come and of course I want the job," said Aragones.
"I have to make it clear that I haven't been approached yet and there are other colleagues who also want the post, but I can't deny that I am really excited about the possibility of coaching the national side."
Aragones has emerged as the favourite to replace Saez who quit last week after intense media pressure forced him to rethink his decision to stay on as coach following Spain's dismal performance at Euro 2004.
Spain reinforced their reputation as perennial underachievers by failing to qualify for the quarter-finals after scoring just two goals in three Group A games and slumping to a 1-0 defeat against hosts Portugal.
But Aragones, who is the most experienced coach in the Primera Liga, believes that despite yet another disappointing performance at a major international championship the Spanish side still has a bright future ahead of it.
"The most important thing is that Spain has a young side, with an average age of 24," he said. "That is down to Inaki Saez and no one can take that away from him."
The Spanish Football Federation is expected to make a decision over who will succeed Saez within the next two weeks.
Other possible candidates are former Villarreal coach Benito Floro, former Malaga boss Juande Ramos and Victor Fernandez, who left Real Betis at the end of last season. 1088432548 |
