Welcome to Hell, Mr Neville. by Gerry
I was delighted to see that we got the mancs in the FA Cup draw on Monday and it brought to mind the old saying, “he who laughs last, laughs loudest”. After their extremely fortunate referee-assisted victory over us at the Theatre of Prawns in a game which we dominated, I was really hoping we’d get another crack at them in the cup. The fact that we are at home is an added bonus but to be honest I’d fancy our chances against them no matter where we played them.

The mancs are hoping to paper over the cracks of their descent towards mediocrity by holding on to second spot in the league and winning a cup double this season but I think they should prepare themselves for disappointment. We are hot on their heels in the league and now have a great chance of dumping them out of the cup as well, life is sweet. Hopefully another scouser, Paul Jewel, can complete their misery by masterminding a Wigan victory in the Carling cup final later this month, I’m sure all Liverpool fans will be lending them their support for the day.

I would also like to say a big thank to Gary Neville for providing the team and the supporters with a little bit of extra motivation for this game by his actions last time, when he ran the length of the pitch in a childishly over the top celebratation of the mancs last minute goal in front of the Liverpool fans. In defending himself from a charge by the FA for these actions, he said that it was just a “passionate” response to the goal. Oh dear, Mr Neville, I fear that the “welcome to hell” messages the mancs received when they played a CL game in Turkey a few years ago, will pale in comparison to the “passionate” reception you’re going to receive at Anfield on the 18th of Feb. I’ll be seeing you there myself so stay healthy I’d hate for you to miss it.

In other matters, the transfer window has closed and once again the signing of a quality player for the right wing continues to elude us. Although this is disappointing, I’m proud of the fact that the club are refusing to be held to ransom by both the transfer money being asked for by some clubs and the wage demands of some of the targets. This stance will stand us in good stead in future transfer dealings. Clubs and players will soon realise that when Liverpool say they’ve made their final offer, they mean it and you either accept it or live to regret it.

There were also some interesting rumours floating around that apparently we had a last minute £12 million, player plus cash bid for Defoe turned down by Spurs. At this point, I’m not sure how much truth is in it but Defoe would certainly have been a welcome addition to the squad. Probably even more interesting is, who was the player we were willing to trade? Cisse anyone? Overall though, we’ve done well in this transfer window. Kromkamp and Dagger have come in to strengthen the defence, Mellor, Potter and Pongo can continue their development while out on loan and of course, God has come home.

It was great watching Fowler at the recent press conference, the smile never left his face for a second and when you heard him say that he felt like a kid waking up on Christmas day every morning and that he was living prove of what can happen when you pray hard enough for something, it almost brought a tear to the eye and just shows that he shares the same depth of feeling for the club that all of us supporters also feel, he truly is one of our own.

He hasn’t kicked a ball yet and already he has become a hugely important player for us. I feel he must get a place on the bench tonight in our game against the brummies. Our performances in recent games, most notably against Pompey, have looked a bit lethargic at times and even the great StevieG has occasionally looked out of sorts. The mere presence of Fowler on the bench could provide the team and the supporters with the extra inspiration to put on a really good performance and pick another much needed three points to keep the pressure on the mancs and to keep the confidence high ahead of our weekend showdown with chelski.

The thought of Fowler back in a Red shirt, coming on as a late substitute in a tight game at chelski at the weekend, has crossed my mind more then once this week. However, I won’t put the mockers on it by saying anymore, I’ll let you figure out the rest of the fairytale for yourself and if Istanbul wasn’t enough to convince you that fairytales can come true, then just have a look at who’s sitting on our bench tonight.
