In the aftermath of yesterdays convincing victory over the Toon, it was tempting to be harsh and think, “Michael Who?”. St Michael received a mixed reception from the fans on his return to Anfield and although it was unfortunate to hear some fans booing him, I suppose under the circumstances it was to be expected. Despite the great service and goals he scored for the club in the years he was here, it is often the last memory that remains freshest in the forefront of peoples minds.
I have fond memories of Owen and still hold him in high regard for the many goals he scored for us, most particularly I often remember the two great goals he scored that won us the FA Cup final over the Gooners in 2002. However, I know many other Liverpool fans who’s over-riding memory of Owen is one of betrayal and although I don’t fully agree with them, I can understand their point of view. Rightly or wrongly, they feel Owen misled the club and the supporters for over a year when he constantly claimed he didn’t want to leave and would soon sign a new contract, yet when Real came calling he couldn’t get out of here quick enough. There may be some merit to this argument but quite frankly I’m fed up hearing about it and some people just need to accept that its all ancient history now and its time to move on. This old Owen debate has been done to death at this stage but yesterdays game left me asking myself a new and far more interesting question about St Michael, would he now even get into our current side?
There was a lot of evidence in the game that perhaps suggests why Rafa wasn’t overly keen to re-sign him. If you can create opportunities then there’s few better then Owen to finish them off but although he is a world class finisher we saw yesterday that there’s precious little else to his game. He didn’t get a shot at our goal and I’m finding it difficult to remember an occasion where he even managed to touch the ball at all during the game. However, perhaps more tellingly then this is the fact that not once in the game did he ever even put any of our defenders under pressure when they were in possession. Although I accept that it can’t have been easy for him as he was starved of service due to us totally dominating the game, I still think you would have the right to expect a bit more of an effort from a player who cost £17 million and its interesting to compare his performance with that of our front two.
Gerrard put in another awesome man of the match display in a fine team performance yesterday but behind him I would put the efforts our two forwards. Crouch is proving to be a great signing by Rafa and a valuable asset to the side. He never gives less then his best. People debate whether he is stronger in the air or on the ground but I feel his strongest asset is his high work-rate. He just never stops causing problems for defences and seems to be involved in all of our attacks. Yesterday it was his touch that set up Gerrard for the first goal and depending on your point of view, he either scored the second (I believe the goal should be awarded to him) or at the very least it was his header that led to an OG from Given. I’ve always been a fan of Morientes and was very happy when we signed him but even so I’ve still been very surprised at the amount of effort he’s been putting in recently. Although he didn’t pull up any tree’s with us initially, lately his performances have been getting better and better. Yesterday we saw him on many occasions back in our half helping out the defence or trying to win the ball in midfield and make things happen. Its quite clear that Rafa demands effort and hard work from his forwards and on the evidence of yesterdays game Owen for all his goal scoring abilities, no longer fit’s the bill as a Liverpool striker.
This run of ours in the Premiership has now been extended to 8 victories with 8 clean sheets and ironically the number 8 also has a certain significance to our next victims Everton, as that is the amount of goals they’ve conceded in their last two games. It would be very easy to laugh at this latest in a long list of humiliations that our blueshite neighbours and their mongrel supporters have suffered since the end of last season and that’s exactly what I‘ve been doing. Last season their manager Golum, laughingly proclaimed them “the best team on Merseyside” after they had somehow managed to fluke a 4th place finish in the Premiership. This finish was more due to the fact that our manager was having to find his feet in the Premiership with a crippling injury-hit squad then anything the blueshite managed to do on the pitch. Nevertheless they finished in 4th spot, had the prospect of European football and money in their pocket due to this and from the sale of Gorilla boy to the mancs, so surely this would mean that top football talent would be lining up to come to Goodison.
Well actually no, they were humiliatingly turned down by every half decent player they approached. In the end they had to settle for keeping up their longstanding club tradition of signing players nobody else wants and as such made the mediocre signings of Sharon Davies, Phil Nipple and some Danish bloke, nobodies ever heard of. So desperate did they become that they even had to suffer the indignity of persuading a player they had previously released to re-sign for them. Which only goes to prove to the old saying that you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear and Everton even with the lure of money and European football are still just shite, blueshite.
As if this wasn’t enough, their pre-season games gave us a tantalising taste of the humiliation that lay ahead and they suffered a delightful defeat on penalties to an under 18 Thailand selection and followed this with another defeat on penalties to Man City before suffering a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Fenerbahce.
Their dream of Champions League football was laughingly ended as soon as it began when they were well beaten by Villarreal in their qualifying tie. Just as amusing, their hopes in the UEFA Cup were ended just as quickly when they were thumped 5-1 in the away tie of their game against the “mighty” Dinamo Bucharest. However, perhaps even funnier has been their form in the Premiership where humiliating defeats are becoming a real habit with our blueshite neighbours. They have already suffered nine defeats in this campaign, three of them by 4-0 scorelines and we’re not even half through the season yet. This form has seen them back where they belong, just above the relegation zone. Many of their fickle neanderthal supporters who had previously talked of Golum as practically being a candidate for sainthood are now calling for his head. So now its finally our turn to inflict even more misery upon them and I'm looking forward to seeing us putting them firmly back in their place. They will no doubt employ their usual tactics and try to kick their way through us but our boys are well able to handle this and I’m expecting a comfortable victory for us and yet another bloody good laugh at the expense of our blueshite neighbours.

ولا تنسى أن الي وقف تشلسي أيفرتون
يعني أن أي فريق ثاني يوقفه عادي
