Goal.com World Player of the Week #23: Alessandro Nesta

Achievement: Ensured a win for Milan over Chievo at the weekend with a brace and helped his side to a historic win in the Bernabeu over Real Madrid.
Over the past two seasons, there have been fears at San Siro that Alessandro Nesta would never play again. The defender has had to fight off rumours that his career would come to a tragically premature end due to a chronic series of back problems.
However, since returning to the Milan ranks at the tail end of last season, the veteran has undergone a renaissance of form and fitness.
This season may be underwhelming for Milan as a whole, but a large amount of positivity has been taken by Nesta's rehabilitation.
He has helped a green Thiago Silva in his progress towards becoming a central defender of distinction while playing no small part himself. Two goals at Chievo at the weekend have seen Nesta's name back in the headlines, but his understated work in the Bernabeu last week was vital to Milan outscoring their great European rivals.
There have been calls for the 33 year-old to re-align himself with the national team and, on his current form, he would be an asset for any side in the world.

Back In Action | Nesta is fit again and excelling
Three goals in two games for the creative midfielder. He was already playing well within the Chelsea diamond and now he looks to have added his trademark goalscoring back into the mix. Featured prominently in the wins against both Atletico Madrid and Blackburn Rovers.
2. Tim Wiese – Werder Bremen and Germany
The Werder shot-stopper went an astonishing 619 minutes - more then ten hours - without conceding a goal. After shipping after only 39 seconds against Bochum, he narrowly fell short of Oliver Reck's record of 641 minutes in goal for Werder Bremen without concession.
Nonetheless, the 4-1 win at Bochum was the 15th undefeated game for Thomas Schaaf's side.
4. Mohammed Noor - Al Ittihad and Saudi Arabia
The Gulf's Patrick Vieira scored a hat-trick in the first leg of the Asian Champions League semi-final for against Nagoya Grampus.
“I think Mohammed Noor was the star of this match,” Nagoya boss Dragan Stojkovic declared. “He scored and also set-up goals for his team and he is really a good player."
5. Nunes - Santo Andre and Brazil
The centre-forward scored twice in his team's 2-0 victory over league leaders Palmeiras. Nunes' goals helped to put the spark back into the Brazilian league, allowing Atletico Mineiro, Internacional, Sao Paulo and Flamengo to get closer to top spot.
6. Chidi Edeh - Mohun Bagan
The Mariner's striker scored a stunning four goals against East Bengal in the famous Kolkata derby at the weekend. Having signed for Bagan only this summer, he had been struggling for form in recent weeks, but found his feet in an emphatic 5-3 win for his team. This was only the second time either side has scored five goals in this fixture, and the first time for Bagan.
Incidentally, Chidi, who was making his first Kolkata derby appearance, has set the record for the most goals scored by a player in a derby game. The previous record was three goals, set by Bhaichung Bhutia.
