Fabricio Coloccini and his Argentina team-mates may have taken top honours but Andrea Pirlo as captain, and the rest of the Azzurri were not far behind. Both were able to stand on the podium and enjoy the moment of Olympic excellence in Athens - something they will remember forever. Nothing can be taken away from any of the sides, especially Argentina, Italy and of course, Paraguay who took the silver medal although none of their players are currently operating in Italy. It's a pleasure, however, that the Rossoneri left their mark in Athens. Fabricio will not forget the day and now returns to Milanello where he will be no doubt receive a warm welcome back and a few embraces after the passing away of his mother. Coloccini will be one of nine defenders (Dario Simic will remain) vying for
a Rossoneri starting place and as soon as he sets foot in the Carnago training centre will have to get down to work and prove that he has progressed in respect to four years ago when he first arrived at the club.
Everyone will be just as happy for Andrea. Everyone remembers back to the days when it was should Andrea go the Olympics or stay, then right in the middle of the tournament the criticism surrounding his subsitutions. Of course, the midfielder is an educated man and remained silent throughout, continuing to lead the side and make his contribution without upsetting anyone. The result of his professionalism was a bronze medal and two assists, the first against Mali and then on Friday against Iraq.
