After leaving Rangers on a free transfer in June 2002, Kanchelskis asked Strachan if he could train with Saints to get himself fit

He made a big enough impact in training to be awarded Matthew Le Tissier's number 7 shirt and was given a relatively inexpensive contract until the end of the season.

So far though, he has struggled to break into the first-team, making only a couple of substitute appearances against Everton and Tranmere.
Lacking match fitness, and with the team playing so well at th moment, it may be some time before he gets another chance.

This has been hard to take for a player who has won every honour in the English game.

The young Kanchelskis was sent to a school for gifted footballers at the age of fifteen and then snapped up by Dynamo Kiev.

He spent most of his time there in the reserves though, and in 1988 joined Shakhtar Donetsk, earning his first cap for the Soviet Union within a year when he came on as a substitute against Poland in August 1989.

In 1991 Alex Ferguson was alerted to his talents by a Norweigan advertising executive who sent videos of him playing to Old Trafford. After checking him out in an international match against Germany Ferguson paid £650,000 for his services in March of that year.

He made his debut in May against Crystal Palace and for the next five seasons his pace terrorised Premiership defences.

He won the League Cup in 1992, two Premier League titles in 92/93 and 93/94, and the FA Cup in 93/94. The following season, despite injury problems, Kanchelskis finished as United's top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.

Things turned sour after a dispute with the club however and he was transferred to Everton for £5 million in the summer. He scored 16 goals in his first season at Goodison and played for Russia in Euro 96.

In January 1997, after the Toffeemen suffered a run of six defeats, Fiorentina paid £8 million to take him to Italy. A quick return to Britain and Rangers followed though with the Scottish giants paying a club record £5.5 million for him.

In his first season in the SPL he scored nine goals, but after recovering from injury he struggled to make an impact north of the Border. He Completed a three-month loan deal with Manchester City but again failed to re-establish himself fully on his return to Ibrox and eventually made the move South.
