Au Revoir Cisse by Gerry
Football can be very ironic at times and that was certainly the case on Sunday in our game against Mike Reilly and the mancs. There were times during the Houllier era when it seemed that we were miles behind them and yet we had a good record of victories over them. I would of course celebrate these victories but still knew deep down that they had the better side and we simply didn’t have the quality of personnel or the consistency to compete with them over a season. The ironic thing about our loss on Sunday is that the situation now seems to have totally reversed itself. This time they ended up with the points but we are the better side with the quality personnel and the consistency to out do them over the season.

We lost the game when a non-free kick was delivered into our box in the 90th minute and Rio Cokehead rose highest (and lets face it he’s had plenty of practice at getting high) and headed home. However, what happened in the 90th minute cannot disguise what happened in the previous 89. Despite playing the game at least two gears below our best, we were in total control throughout and won the game in every area except for the score sheet. In fact it almost seemed to be too easy for us and its just a pity that the mancs didn’t get their goal earlier as this would have forced us into top gear and we would surely have torn them apart. Although the result was disappointing, I’m sure Rafa will take plenty of positives from the performance but along with the positives I’m equally sure that he will be aware of one or two negatives.

After careful analysis of the game and using the latest scientific techniques, I’ve come to the considered opinion that Cisse is a useless fucking tosser. I realise my conclusions will not sit well with some people but unlike certain other bollocks talkers and their long-winded articles that you seem to see everywhere on the net, I don’t like to beat around the bush in these matters and try to call things as I see them and you’re free to agree or disagree in the comments section.

I, like many others, have given him the benefit up until now but just when you’re patience was about to run out he’d manage to score a goal and you’d think maybe, just maybe this will be the start of something but it never is. In Sundays game there were a number of examples as to why I think this guy will never make it as a Liverpool player and we should cut our losses and get rid of him at the earliest opportunity.

The obvious one was his unbelievable miss. How a supposed world-class striker can remain sitting on his arse sulking for so long when the ball is still active in the box is incredible. It was only after the Wizard of Oz hit a great strike at the manc goal that he was belatedly getting to his feet and so when the rebound came his way he was unprepared and blasted it over the bar from barely six yards, when he had so much time and space that he could have taken a touch, criminal! The other obvious fuck up was when Gerrard played that wonderful world class pass to him that was just begging to be hit with his left and this idiot tries to control it and bring it on to his right which of course results in him losing possession, what a waste! I have often mentioned that I am a Garcia fan and how he has the ability to do the unorthodox that can often turn such tight games as Sundays. I know Little Luis wasn’t available for this one but can you imagine what he, with his speed of thought and reaction, would have done with both of these chances?

However both of these incidents bad as they were could perhaps be almost forgivable, all forwards occasionally miss simple chances or make occasional stupid decisions and these things can be worked on in training. Perhaps more telling is a couple of smaller incidents that stuck in my mind from the first half. The first was when the Wizard of Oz played a poor pass to him and instead of making an effort to get to the ball he preferred to just stand there giving dagger looks to Harry. The second was when I think it was Ferdinand played a back pass to the keeper and Cisse just stood looking on and it was left to Crouch to make a run from a further position to put pressure on the keeper, which resulted in us winning a throw-in. Both small incidents in themselves but they speak volumes about the players attitude and commitment, and unfortunately these are things that you cannot put right on a training field, a player either has them or he hasn’t and I think its clear Cisse does not.

Cisse will be with us until at least the Summer and I will of course always support him and be willing him to score while he’s wearing the Red shirt but I think its time to move Sinama ahead of him in our order of strikers. Pongo shows great movement when he plays upfront, we know he can finish chances and there’s no questioning the lads commitment. Its time to give him a few chances ahead of Cisse in the second half of the season and let him show us what he can do. I think a Crouch/Pongo partnership upfront would be well worth a try.

I don’t want to say too much about old Mother Reilly as I covered him in the last blog. Suffice to say his appointment to referee the game turned out as I feared and it was yet again one of his stupid decisions that lead to them taking the victory. I’m sure Ferguson amply rewarded him for his man of the match performance for the mancs.

Finally, on to our old friend Mr Neville. I’m not a big fan of a lot of these stupid rules that FIFA/UEFA tend to occasionally introduce to justify their existence. One of these is the one concerning the over-celebration of a goal by a player that may be deemed inciteful to the crowd and the player in question is supposed to be booked. We saw examples of this rule being stupidly applied recently when Robben ended up being sent off for a second bookable offence for celebrating with his own fans! That being the case what are we to make of the 30 yr old manc captain and experienced England international who rather then celebrating a goal with his team mates and supporters, ran the length of the pitch to childishly celebrate the goal in front of the Liverpool fans? If this rule has to exist then surely there can be no finer example of somebody breaking it and they should throw the book at him. Neville calls this a “passionate” response, well personally I think Neville is an ugly sour-faced bastard who deserves a good kick in the nuts. You may think these are harsh words but I’m just being “passionate”.

Have you noticed how muted the manc fans have become since this victory? They just haven’t been their usual arrogant selves, perhaps they’re feeling the cold chill of the wind of change as it blows across the north. A cheap-friendly-referee-assisted victory cannot stop the tide from turning and I think deep down inside they know that their worst fears are about to be realised, the Reds are on the rise again and there’s nothing they or their piece of shit team can do to stop the Rafalution.

I'm a big fan of Cissé, but if he's stretching my patience, it's easy to conclude how his manager feels. His inconsistency doesn't stretch match to match, but minute to minute. It’s enough to leave you pulling out your Mohican.
Cissé does some brilliant things: a great backheel, a stunning cross, a thumping shot, a burst of electric pace. But they are nearly always followed with a wayward pass, a simple error, a basic miscontrol.
His instincts seem at odds with his instructions. He's a frustrating player, but also seems constantly frustrated with himself and with the world (on the pitch at least). At times he looks like he doesn't even know what he's doing, confused as to where he should run.
It's like he's so desperate to please and to fit in with what the manager wants, he's lost sight of his natural game, and is neither doing what Rafa requests nor what is best for him. When he runs at defenders he seems hesitant half the time, and too eager the other half, and the anxiety sees him overrun the ball.
Cissé is different to the frustrating Emile Heskey, who I felt could be a much more effective player, and use his bull-like strength to greater effect; Cissé, unlike Heskey, is a natural striker: it's about the positions you take up, your preparedness to get into the six-yard box (even if you sky the ball over the bar), or to take a shot when only half a chance presents itself. Cissé has all those latter attributes; he's just not been very good at executing them.
Every time he plays, he feels on trial. It's his 'big chance'. He has to score, or he's out on the wing, or out of the side; and sometimes, even if he has scored, that happens, if Rafa, who likes to rotate his strikers, feels another more suited for the next fixture. Cissé looks anxious, lacking in confidence. Watch his goals for Auxerre, and there's a supreme confidence about him. But at Auxerre he felt at home, in his element.
His technique for most of those goals in France was sublime, his reactions first-rate. He produced all manner of finishes, from the powerful to the subtle and cheeky. His record, in a top league, was phenomenal. But he was the main man, le cock of the roost.
Cissé is a natural finisher, but one lacking confidence and I just don't see him ever getting it at Anfield. Without confidence, a striker will always look unnatural. If you only watched Michael Owen on his bad days, you'd conclude the same; but Owen has a more robust mentality.
I just don't see an ideal marriage between what Benيtez wants and what Cissé offers; but Cissé's pace, along with the promise of what he might just come up with, tempts the manager. My view is that Gérard Houllier would have got far more out of Cissé for Liverpool; but that Benetez can shape a far better Liverpool than Houllier, and that's all that counts.
This is about getting the best out of the team, not one player. But of all the players at Liverpool, Cissé is one of those I've been desperate to see succeed, especially after his injury last season and the way he worked so hard to get fit so soon. I would love to see him scoring week-in, week-out. But I'd prefer to see the team winning, and it's up to the manager to field the best team to do that.
If Benetez went out of his way to placate Cissé, to offer him the arm around the shoulder as well as weekly reassurances (in the way I feel Houllier, who paid all that money, would have), it would go against his successful methods and perhaps diminish the aura the manager wants to create.
The point is that Rafa doesn't single out individuals for special attention. There's no favouritism, with the possible exception of his attempts to keep Steven Gerrard last summer, after he too failed to feel loved by the manager. The fact is that you can make an exception to your rule for a player as proven and as crucial as Gerrard; his performances for the club have earned a little leeway. Cissé's haven't.
Cissé's season actually mirrors Ian Rush's year in Turin: a few cup goals against weak opposition (Rushie scored five in one cup game for Juventus) but not enough in the league. Liverpool's record goalscorer only managed 14 goals in Italy, just seven in the league. His teammates were never quite on the same wavelength. How can the deadliest striker in English football in the '80s fail so miserably in Turin? After all, he was a natural, right?
As with examples like Diego Forlan, who went on to be the top scorer in Spain, it shows that finishers need stability, security.
I'm guessing Benetz sees Cissé’s ability in training, as in training a player is relaxed. Training is when you see the true player, in terms of pure ability, but it's on the pitch where you need to see how pressure affects that ability. If you can't translate it into performances on matchday, it's of no use.
It's about fitting into your environment, feeling loved (or trusted), understanding what's required. It's a number of factors that conspire so that when you step over that white line, you are focussed, relaxed and full of self-belief. Strikers who are not relaxed snatch at chances, try too hard. Instead of clarity in the moment, your head is a mix of conflicting messages, and you end up doing something that is neither one thing nor the other.
Despite his difficulties at Liverpool, I believe Cissé will go on to be a big success somewhere else. There is a hugely talented player in there, just dying to get out. But he will need another Guy Roux – a manager prepared to make him feel special.
But it does look like Liverpool need a new quick striker, to play off Crouch when Rafa is looking for pace on the break, given Morientes will never offer that. Sinama-Pongolle has a lot of potential, but it's not yet clear whether he quite has what it takes to be a regular, although still has plenty to offer to the squad. While far from quick, it will also be interesting to see if Neil Mellor's loan is to prove his fitness and get some experience, or a precursor to a sale.
The revelation by Sven that Michael Owen is unhappy at Newcastle was no surprise. In the summer I felt Rafa was correct to go for Crouch, because of the style of play and 4-5-1 system, and because Crouch is the kind of player we needed to hold the attack together. But now we play two strikers on at least some occasions (although when it's Morientes, he drops deeper), bringing Owen back has to be considered. I'd love to know what's in Mickey's contract.
With only a week left to the transfer window, it looks like Cissé will have four more months to prove himself at Liverpool, or for everyone to call it quits. I haven't given up hope, but I'm also no longer holding my breath.
