Harry Kewell: A Red Herring?
by Gerry
Well judging from the comments, my review of our “magnificent seven” of controversial players seems to have gotten off to a nice positive start with my last blog about Garcia, unfortunately the calm waters are sure to get a little choppier with todays subject, Harry Kewell. Firstly I feel I must apologise if the title of this blog has caused anybody to be upset. Comparing Harry Kewell to a herring may seem like I am being harsh…….. to the herring. However, I can assure fish lovers everywhere that I meant no offence, in fact some of my best friends are herrings.
As you’ve probably guessed by now and as some regular blog readers will already be aware, I am certainly no fan of Harry. Some of the qualities I attributed to Garcia in the last blog are sadly lacking in Kewell. There’s no doubt he has a God-given talent, when he’s in the mood to show it, but unfortunately God forgot to give him a little heart and some spine to go along with it. Don’t get me wrong, I was as excited as anybody else when we signed him. I knew from some friends of mine who suffer the indignity of being Leeds Utd supporters, that Kewell tended to be very inconsistent but I figured at the price we were getting him for, he’d be well worth a gamble. Sadly that gamble hasn’t paid off and it doesn’t like it’s look like it’s going to pay off anytime soon.
Its hard to know where to start with this guy, so I thought it might be an idea to look backward before looking forward. Below is an excerpt from a blog I wrote on the 14th of March and it was about the attitude (or lack of it) of certain players. If you can cast you’re mind back, this was written at the time when our side was decimated by injuries and Rafa was struggling to put a decent side on the pitch, he felt Kewell was fit enough to play but Kewell refused, claiming he was too badly injured and then he finally found a physiotherapist in Amsterdam who confirmed his injury.
This brings me once again to our friend Mr Kewell. I can heartly recommend Amsterdam as the place to go if you want to get your groin some world class treatment but Harry went there for a different type of treatment. He found himself a physiotherapist who tells us that Harry needs at least three month’s rest to fully recover from his apparent groin strain. The Kewellites (my fellow blogger among them) point to this as evidence that their beloved £250,000 a month player is after all unfit and should now be allowed to sit on his arse for 4 month’s (3 month’s would bring us to June hence the extra month) and after this time if he feels up to it he may play and he might even be back to his best.
This is of course, bullshit. Even allowing for all the above to be true and Harry was given the required rest period, I think we can make an educated guess at what would happen next. On his return we will most likely have a period of more mediocre performances which no doubt will be put down his lack of match fitness, I have no doubt that as these performances continue they will be then put down to a lack of confidence and this will lead yet again to another inevitable injury and we’ll be back where we started. This is pure guesswork on my part but on the evidence of what we’ve seen from Kewell so far I’m confident this would prove to be the case and if I’m wrong then tune into this blog and you’ll see that I’ll gladly admit it but unlike my fellow blogger, I’m seldom wrong.
It comes back to my original point about attitude, Kewell despite all his undoubted ability simply doesn’t have the right attitude to make it at this club. The most telling report about Kewell came this week, not from some Dutch physiotherapist but from Rafa Benitez himself. This was when Rafa expressed his confusion and frustration at Kewells injury. This statement comes from a man who seldom publicly criticizes a player and who has the might of the Liverpool backroom staff, medical staff and physiotherapists behind him and a man who knows the game and players inside out. I have much higher regard for Rafa’s opinion of things.
The truth is that if Kewell couldn’t play, he wouldn’t have been asked to. He can play but refuse’s to because he feels he’s not 100%. If Kewell had the right attitude then at even 80 or 90% fitness he’d play and still be a better option then half the players in the side at the moment. Can you imagine Carra in the same situation? And what of Xabi Alonso? Here’s a player who doctor’s said won’t be able to kick a ball for us until next season but who we’re told is currently sweating blood in an effort to get himself fit to be able to come back and contribute something before the season end’s, regardless of what the doctor’s say. Compare Carra and Alonso to Kewell and I think you will see my point about the attitude of players.
Kewell did manage to hang around long enough to stage a very convenient miraculous recovery just in time to hoodwink himself a place in our CL final line-up and bravely managed to play a whole 25 minutes before limping off. Its now 8 month’s, £2 million in wages and one groin operation since I wrote that blog and other then Kewell’s stupid hairstyle can we really say anything has changed? In fairness I know of course that he can’t be fully match fit yet and a fully fit, fully focused and consistent Harry Kewell would be a huge asset to our side but I can’t see that ever being the case with this waster. I’m sure he will play some games and occasionally have his moments but as usual these moments will be few and far between.
No doubt some of the Kewellites will tell me to get off his back and say now that he’s fit again he should be given yet another chance and as we have already invested so much time and money in him already, maybe they have a point. However, I think that the attitude and lack of effort often shown by this clown since he’s been at the club has been nothing short of disgraceful and he should be offloaded at the earliest opportunity to anybody who’s stupid enough to want him.[/align]
