The Miracle of Istanbul (Part Two)

Part Two: The Agony and The Ecstasy.
Finally after all the twists and turns of our journey to Istanbul, the much anticipated day of the final arrived. I think its fair to say that most Liverpool fans on that day, looked forward to the game with a slightly edgy anticipation. All of the possible scenarios that might take place in the forthcoming game were discussed at great length by all, but none came close to predicting the roller-coaster ride of a game we were about to witness.
The game would later become known as "The Miracle of Istanbul" for very good reason. However, I think that perhaps it may be more appropriate to refer to this game as "The 7 Miracles of Istanbul", because having reviewed the footage so many times, I believe that our victory that night came about as a result of 7 little miracles but I’ll come back to them shortly.
I’m sure in many years to come, Liverpool fans will ask, "Where were you when we won number 5?" In the same way some older people often ask the question, "Where were you when JFK was shot?" And we all have our own tales to tell but as for me, I was in a bar in Dublin with 5 mates. Four of these are die-hard Liverpool fans and the fifth has no interest in football, as he’s a Leeds fan. We got there nice and early, mainly to get good seats but also to build up a good head of steam by knocking back as many pints as we could before the game got underway.
When we got news of the starting line-ups it raised a few eyebrows. AC Milan had a pretty much expected line-up full of the usual household names but Liverpool had included Kewell and Traore but Hamann was starting on the bench. Kewell’s inclusion had to be considered as a bit of a gamble, Traore is Traore and I never like to see his name in our starting line-up, although as things turned out he played very well on the night but Hamann not starting was hard to understand although it later turned out, he was carrying an injury. Still, despite our reservations it appeared that Rafa was putting out a side to attack Milan’s aging defence and this seemed like a good tactic.
How wrong we were. Just about everything that could possibly go wrong in 45 minutes of football, went wrong for us in that first half. We got off to the worst possible start when with one minute gone, we found ourselves 1-0 down courtesy of a header from the 60yr old Paulo Mussolini, shite! Without Hamann in our line-up, Kaka seemed to be running the show in the space between our midfield and defence, and Milan were cutting through us time and again. In the 14th minute Garcia cleared a Hernan Creepo header off the line and in the 22nd minute things got even worse when Harry’s ankle gave out and he had to be replaced.
We thought this might be the chance to bring on Hamann but instead the bloody useless waste of space known as Smicer came on. In the 28th minute Sheva had a goal ruled out for offside and this is starting to look like a turkey shoot. In the 39th minute the inevitable happens and Creepo puts them 2-0 up and 4 minutes later he makes it 3-0, BOLLOCKS!! The half time whistle finally went on what was rapidly turning into a massacre.
The bar I was in was mainly full of Liverpool supporters and a depressed silence descended. Other then the occasional swear word, nobody had much to say and people suddenly began very interested in reading the back of their beer mats. Normally the bar is so noisy when a match is on that you can’t hear what the commentators are saying but as things were so quiet, some of the words and phrases of the studio "experts" filtered through to our ears. Words such as, "humiliation" and "disaster" and "Liverpool getting their comeuppance" and "damage limitation" etc. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so low after 45 minutes of football, we would need a miracle to get back into the game but little did we know, the pendulum was about to start swinging the other way and we would be given seven.
Miracle No1: You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Suddenly the TV guy’s decided to show the pictures of the "depressed" Liverpool fans in the stadium but much to everyone’s surprise, they were singing! 3-0 down at half time and there they were standing tall and proud and belting out, "You’ll never walk alone" at the top of their voices. This club has suffered many dark days off the pitch over the years but on the pitch, this song never seemed more appropriate then it did right then. "When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark". Somebody in the bar where I was, joined in with their singing and before long we were all standing and singing along at the top of our voices. Some of the neutrals in the bar looked at us as if we were insane but we didn’t care and when the team ran back on to the field we were well up for it and shouts of "COME ON LADS" were coming from every corner, it was an amazing swing of emotions in a matter of minutes, incredible stuff!
Miracle No2: StevieG’s Goal.
It was a relief to see Hamann coming on for the second half and he made a huge difference. In the 52nd minute Dudek made a great and very important save from Sheva because less then a minute later we pulled one back. StevieG is known for his thunderbolt goals and he doesn’t score too many with his head but his glancing header from Riise’s cross to make it 3-1 was a superb finish and the place went crazy. However, it wasn’t just the goal but his reaction afterwards that was equally memorable. As he made his way back to the centre circle he shook his fists at his team mates and then at the crowd and shouted "COME ON" and his team mates and the crowd heard him and responded. Sometimes I think if StevieG had fought at the Alamo, the Mexicans would have lost!
Miracle No3: Smicer’s Goal.
Four minutes later and a promising Liverpool attack looked to be over when someone made the mistake of passing the ball to bloody Smicer but wtf Vladi hit a great shot from outside the area and GOAL! 3-2 and we were well and truly back in it. I never doubted him for a minute and always said that bloody Smicer was a great player!
Miracle No4: Xabi’s Penalty
We were still celebrating Smicers goal when a couple of minutes later Gerrard got taken down in the box, YESSSSSSS PENALTY!! But who was going to take it? Gerrard had missed one in a recent game but up stepped Xabi Alonso. My heart was in my mouth because I’ve got to say, Xabi did look a little nervous as he made his run up. It was during this penalty that we Red supporters created a new word for the English language, FUC..YESSSSSSS! Xabi’s penalty was saved but an instant later he knocked the rebound into the net and unbelievably it was 3-3. Suddenly it was all going off, the stadium went ballistic as did the bar where I was and I’m sure that in any part of the globe that Reds had congregated, the scenes must have been incredible.
Miracle No.5: StevieG again.
We had to put up with a couple more scares but the match eventually went into extra time. Something I didn’t fully appreciate at the time was the condition of StevieG at the end of the 90 minutes. I noticed when I rewatched the game later, that he looked totally spent as we went into extra time. All his reserve tanks of energy appeared to be used up and yet somehow throughout the extra-time he moved pretty much to right back and seemingly playing purely on instinct alone put in a brilliant display and nothing got past him.
Miracle No6: Dudek’s save.
In the dying moments of extra-time with the game heading to penalties it looked like Sheva was going to break all of our hearts with what looked like a certain goal but somehow Dudek made the most miraculous of saves to deny him. I’ve watched this incident many times since and everytime, I still think Shevchenko is going to score. I just don’t know how Dudek saved it and I regard it as the most incredible save I’ve ever seen.
Miracle No7: Do De Dudek.
Whatever about the tiredness of the players on the pitch, the 120 minutes of football we had just witnessed had also taken its toll on us supporters and we were all feeling emotionally drained ahead of the penalty shoot-out. These things are always a bit of a lottery and I, just like many others, was muttering a few silent prayers. I’m not sure what Dudek was trying to do but his Do De Dudek antics on the goal-line certainly did the trick. Liverpool were 3-2 ahead as Shevchenko prepared to take Milan’s final kick, if he missed we won and if he scored, we still had one penalty left to win it. He seemed to strike it well but Dudek SAVED! Unbelievable WE WON and became Champions of Europe for a FIFTH TIME.
The scenes after Dudek saved that penalty and when Gerrard lifted the trophy defy deion but suffice to say they were absolutely incredible and something that will stay with me for the rest of my days.
I wasn’t fortunate enough to be one of those people in the Ataturk stadium 12 month’s ago, on that special night when a fairytale came true. And yet somehow I feel as if I was there, I feel that we were all there, the entire Brotherhood of Reds supporters across the world. Together we lived every second, we kicked every ball, we suffered the agonies and celebrated the incredible ecstasy of that wonderful night. A little part of us will always be there and a little part of there will always remain with us.
