Steven Gerrard's Liverpool future is the subject of renewed speculation amid reports he has agreed to join Chelsea in the summer.
Reports in the media claim an unnamed Premiership manager has let the cat out of the bag by revealing the midfielder will move to Stamford Bridge in a £30 million deal.
Gerrard spurned the chance to head to the capital last summer but, if reports are to be believed, he will grasp the second opportunity to sign for The Blues.
Though there has been no fresh bid from Chelsea, it is claimed the England international has concurred on a switch to the champions-elect at the end of the season.
The latest bout of speculation is certain to infuriate Liverpool, who are hellbent on keeping their talismanic skipper at Anfield.
Earlier this week, Reds boss Rafa Benitez stressed the importance of retaining the services of Gerrard for the long term.
Speaking after the 2-1 UEFA Champions League victory over Juventus on Tuesday, Benitez reiterated his stance that the club will not cash in on their captain.
"Let me be very clear about Gerrard," said Benitez.
"We are building a strong team here for the future and that will be a team with Gerrard at its centre.
"We are not selling him for any money in the world.
"He is a local boy, a man of the club and is our captain.
"We are not selling him."
But despite Benitez's insistence that Gerrard is not leaving Merseyside, reports persist that the club will pocket a £30 million windfall from moneybags Chelsea in the summer[/align] |
