في مقال بجريده التايمز عن الحكم رايلي أسمحوا لي بنقله من دون ترجمه لطول المقال Strife of Riley REFEREEING DECISIONS ARE OFTEN said to even themselves out over the course of a season, but controversial judgments made by Mike Riley in two high-profile matches have altered the complexion of the Premiership title race, according to Carragher , the Liverpool defender.
Carragher confronted Riley at half-time on Saturday, saying that he had erred by failing to award Liverpool a penalty for what television replays showed was a clear handball by Tiago, the Chelsea midfield player. Riley was also the man in the middle on October 24 when a dive by Wayne Rooney resulted in a penalty for Manchester United against Arsenal, whose 2-0 defeat that day was their first in the Premiership in 50 matches.
"These decisions can decide the title," Carragher said on Saturday. "If we had got the decision for the handball, we might have got the three points. If that decision hadn't gone against Arsenal at Old Trafford, you never know what might have happened. This referee has made two big mistakes in two big games this season and that could decide the title.
"Everyone knows how difficult it is for referees. They don't get action replays. But that today was so blatant and he was in such a great position, five or six yards away from me, I just can't understand why he didn't give it. We all turned round and he had his whistle to his mouth. I don?t know what happened. Maybe he lost his nerve."
Even José Mourinho seemed to admit that a penalty would have been the correct decision, but Riley, England's representative at last summer's European Championship finals, insisted otherwise. He claimed that he put his whistle to his mouth "in anticipation of another infringement elsewhere in the penalty area", but that explanation raised more questions than answers
