The Reason Michael Owen Is Scum


I've been following this lad's career for almost a decade. We're of a similar age and he went on to great things the rest of us only dream about. Way back in the day around April 1996 was when I first saw the name Michael Owen. It was in a fanzine put up on an obscure part of sky sports tele. Remember this was when the internet was the exception rather than the rule. We didn't have the vast amount of information available to us now.

The name stuck with me for 18 months simply down to what I read on those 2 pages. I often asked people if they had heard of Michael Owen and they gave me that dirty look you give to some pervert eyeing up your girl. Michael who? they often bellowed back at me. Fast forward to May 1997. I was watching West Ham VS Newcastle as our game against Wimbledon wasn't being covered. We were 2-0 down at Selhurst Park. Remember this was the season when we threw the title away but at the time we were in with a shout to finish second (that was the first season that second got you into the CL). The commentator announced their had been a goal at Selhurt and in the corner of the screen popped up 17 year old kid taking his chance against Neil Sullivan as if he were a seasoned pro. That was the first time I heard the words "Michael Owen" uttered. I remember in the post match interview a disappointed Roy Evans saying "maybe his time has come" ... and it did. The rest is history.

Following THAT goal a year later against Argentina something odd happened. It was as if Michael had become the property of England rather than Liverpool. From there on in he was know as "England's Michael Owen". He loved that of course. It's as if his only loyalty was to his nation. Never mind the people who gave him all he has. (compare his to Carragher or Gerrard or Fowler). It wasn't long after that he explained how it was his "ambition and life's dream" to one day leave Liverpool and play abroad. Fair enough, I can understand that.

Fast forward 5 years and that dream comes true. At the time he said something along the lines of it being his ultimate dream signing for "the biggest club in the world" and "when Madrid come knocking, you don't say no". I accepted that. The club cocked up in not signing him up sooner. I was disappointed but I honestly was expecting an Ian Rush eventually.

Now the point at which I have lost total respect for the man is him going to Newcastle. Who gives up on their "ultimate dream" after 1 year? Had Liverpool not got him this time, is staying at Madrid for just another FOUR MONTHS the be all and end all? After all it was his dream. Neither do I understand his obsession with the World Cup. He's played in 2 already and he'll play again. He is England's top man. Sven will never drop him. It would be like Rafa dropping Gerrard for more than a couple of games. You know he's going to Germany, I know he's going to Germany and he know's he's going to Germany.

The truth of it all is that Michael Owen wants to leave Madrid because he didn't take it by storm and is just another player over there. He spit his toys out the pram and had NO HESITATION SIGNING FOR Newcatle or even MANCHESTER UNITED. His motives are the world cup and money. If he really wanted to return to Anfield he would have. I guess the £100k a week, hero worship and England guarantees were too much to turn down. I'll never forget him saying he went to Madrid as he couldn't face up to playing against us.

Well Michael, from now on you walk alone. [/align]
