Famine
Happiness, comfort, satisfaction and health, that are surrounding us, have appeared through the media, and have planted in our minds the thought of all people obtainment of comfortable life. Yet Kiven Carter, the dead photographer, could have clarified to people around the world that that thought is completely contrary to the reality by taking an influencing picture of the hidden side of the world. The expressive picture that demonstrates the suffering of an emaciated child against the difficulties of life, represents a humanitarian message, and reflects a commiseration to poor people who might find half of their daily needed food.
In 1994, Kiven Carter took a picture, of a weak and starved child, that expressed how poor people are in Sudan, and how miserable the life is there. While a vulture was watching from close distance, a child was crawling toward food camp, but unfortunately the child couldn’t keep crawling, and sat in an emaciated way. The vulture was waiting for the child to die to feed its self. The vulture its self couldn’t find any food, so as the child was trying to survive, the vulture was, too. The picture images a conflict between survival and death; in other words, the other should die, otherwise I die. Also, the picture shows the inability of the child while it was bowing in a way that indicates the fear of being annihilated. All these conflicts between the child and the life difficulties, and between the vulture and the child and the psychological conflict have appeals for help to be heard by whom they might be important.
In the picture, the child seemed to be in a remote area far away from populated areas. And, that develops a sense that didn’t appear clearly, but appeared in a simple deion of the prevailing situation in Sudan. The causes of famine can be classified under two main reasons: the cause of human-made, and the cause of nature. And, Sudan unfortunately has both of them. The reasons are merely the reflection or the appearance of political instability and civil war that does not have an end in southern Sudan; furthermore, the nature reason is the phenomenon of desertification in northern Sudan. Those two reasons are the answer to the questions about the child existence alone in a region that is free from human beings. So, civil war in the south and deforestation in the north have caused the displacement of that child. That is certainly is just one example of the thousands of children and women and elderly people who are suffering the same or worse. This gives impetus to relief agencies around the world to work on helping people in Sudan, and affects the feelings of people who have the ability, and makes them support those agencies. As for people who suffer the poverty which isn’t a life-threatening, it also has a great message to them.
For those people who struggle with life, and live in poverty which doesn’t threaten the continuation of life, and have difficulties in obtaining a living, the picture has a message of condolence and a message saying that their lives are still okay as long as they can acquire the daily food. That would make them feel happy for the life they have, and would make them feel lucky for not being in the child situation. For instant, in one of the poorest villages of India, there was a woman with her two children didn’t have a house to run to in the rain one night. The woman tried to find a place to protect her children from the rain, but had no choice but an old woody door lying on the street. Then, she took the door, and sat it diagonally to the wall, and came under the wall with her two children. Then, her older son looked at her and asked “where are the people who don’t have a door like ours going to stay?”So, the child was happy for having a door while watching the other homeless people in the street, and forgot the reality that he and his family don’t have a house.
Kiven Carter could have successfully delivered the suffering of millions around the world and send a message of condolence to the poor people around the world through only one image. He has chosen a child to bring the appeal to the world describing how the dark side is; in other word, he has taken the people to a top of a mountain to see the other side behind it. “I am depressed, money for child support, money for debts, money. I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, of killer executioners” those words were portion of Carter’s last words that he wrote at a river where he used to play when he was a child on 27 July 1994.
