الكنج لويس - انا شفت مباراة الفيلا واعتقد ان توريس قدم مستوى حلو باول مباراه له
كان بارد جدا وكان مندمج مع الفريق وكان عنده فرصتين للتسجيل

It is October 1990, just a few months after King Kenny's last official outing for the Reds. In truth, he effectively retired himself as a player a couple of years before that date, but May 1st – against Derby, the same opposition as five months later – he finally hung up his boots for good following a 19-minute cameo.

It's one of my great regrets in life that I didn't see him play in the flesh. I got to see all my childhood idols, bar Dalglish and Alan Hansen, both of whom finally hung up their boots in the summer of 1990.

By that stage I had every Liverpool video tape I could get my hands on. It meant I could still marvel at the no.7's play. But it's a bit of a sad irony that only scraps of Dalglish's genius remain recorded for posterity, while every action of Luke Chadwick has been captured by the cameras.

The tapes I possessed showcased Kenny's sharp thinking, always a few seconds ahead of the rest. But he had the skill to match the speed of thought – no point thinking quickly only to miscontrol the ball or underweight the pass – and a real gritty edge to his play. For someone so gifted on the ball he was a tough .

And for a creator of goals he was also hugely prolific: a 40-goal season in Scotland and a 30-goal season in his first year in England; and over 100 league goals both north and south of the border. In his first six seasons for the Reds he averaged 23 goals in all competitions. It was generally easier to hit those kind of targets back then, but even so, he was supremely consistent.

Of course, assists weren't monitored in those days; they'd have taken some counting in Dalglish's case, especially once Ian Rush was running onto his astute, inch-perfect, defence-splitting passes. Has there ever been a better partnership in English football? (Aside, of course, from Daniel Amokachi and Paul Rideout.)

What was more of a shock for me was when, a few years ago, ITV Digital began showing some old Liverpool European games from the '70s. I watched in horror as, in one game, Kenny shanked a shot wildly into the Kop. He was human after all.

While Dalglish was an undoubted genius on the pitch, off it he continues to impress me to this day. It's rare to hear him say a bad word against the Reds, or its manager of the day. When called upon as a TV pundit, he refuses to get drawn into stating what the interviewer wants. He knows that it's easy to blithely criticise if you haven't been there and done it. I can’t recall him trotting out lame clichés.

Perhaps it seems at times like he says nothing, or states the obvious, or sits on the fence. But what he is really doing is acknowledging that a manager has to make his decisions for a reason, and that we are not privy to all the facts. (Although at times you sense he's being an awkward git, just for the hell of it...)

In stark contrast to Dalglish's laconic wit was his impressive handling of the Hillsborough disaster. He had such a dignity about him, and did the club proud in its darkest, most testing hour. But clearly the awful events took their toll, and within two years he'd retired, showing the signs of serious stress.

But it's as a player, in happier times, that he'll be remembered most. No other player in the history of the game, before or since, has ever looked so overcome with joy whenever scoring a goal. While modern players might spend time practising elaborate celebrations that say ‘look at me, aren’t I cool/clever/an Olympic gymnast’, to a fan nothing is more pleasing than a player going crazy with glee and demented delight.

Some things in football should be beyond debate. I recently had to Google something relating to Manchester United (yes, I felt unclean, and was surprised it passed the safe-search filter), and stumbled across a piece on an independent United website.

I first laughed when the writer said Liverpool have never had an exciting winger to compare with Giggs, Best, Ronaldo and, er, Gordon Hill. Those fellas McManaman and Heighway weren't half bad, but of course, Kenny's greatest signing, John Barnes, was the most exciting –– and devastating –– talent of the late '80s. A double Football Writers Player of the Year and two-time league champion, he'll be remembered long after Hill.

But I had to laugh even harder when the writer (presumably from his padded cell) stated that Liverpool "have never had one player that could ever be described as a genius like Best or Cantona, or a Wayne Rooney."

(If only from a literal point of view, that last point is true: Liverpool have never had a player called Wayne Rooney.)

Given the writer could remember Gordon Hill from the late '70s, you'd have thought Kenny Dalglish's name may have sprung to mind. Y'know –– the man who won six league titles and three European Cups as Liverpool's key player, while United could manage no more than the occasional FA Cup?

Even allowing for its obvious outrageous bias and tedious lack of irony, it backs up my theory that the saying 'football is a game about opinions' makes some people think their opinions are as valid as those who have earned the right to express theirs.

'I'm entitled to my opinion' may be the standard response, but frankly, I'd just as soon trust the insight of a monkey in the Amazon who's never seen a football match. After all, he’s entitled to his opinion too. People with 'views' such as those from the United website should be visited by the Opinion Police, to have their keyboards confiscated and Opinion Licences revoked.

Some things in football should be beyond opinion. If ever there was a nailed-on fact, it's that Kenny Dalglish was a genius of a player, whose talent actually made a difference when achieving extraordinary success –– the kind United still can't mirror, given it was both at home and in Europe simultaneously. Another truth is that, as yet, Wayne Rooney is nowhere near fit to lace Dalglish's boots.

Not only was he a genius of a player, but King Kenny went on to win league championships as a manager of two different clubs: with Liverpool, three times, and once with Blackburn. How many truly great players can boast such impressive management credentials? It's a select bunch.

But hey, I could waffle on for hours. Sometimes the simple statements get straight to the point where fancy words fall flat.

I think the Kop said it best when they said: [clap-clap, clap-clap-clap, clap-clap-clap-clap] Dalglish!
