Zinedine Zidane has been voted as the greatest European footballer of all time by listeners to Radio Five Live who took part in the station's Euro Stars project, while England skipper David Beckham failed to make the top 40 listing.
The French midfielder gained 12% of the overall vote to finish 2% ahead of the legendary Johan Cruyff in second place.
Another, legend, George Best, who appeared on the show, was a further 2% behind in 3rd place with Holland's Marco Van Basten in 4th and Thierry Henry in 5th.
The results were announced in a special programme broadcast tonight on Five Live.
The highest England player was Bobby Moore in 8th position. He was also the highest placed defender.
Peter Schmeichel was named top goalkeeper in 15th place ahead of Gordon Banks, Lev Yashin and Dino Zoff, the only other shot-stoppers to feature in the Top 40.
Kenny Dalglish was top Scot in 16th with the Republic of Ireland's only representative, Roy Keane, in 18th.
Wales also only had one player featured - the late John Charles who finished in 17th.
Listeners were asked to visit the Euro Stars page on the Five Live website and vote for their top five from the 40 players nominated.
These nominations were selected by a Five Live football panel consisting of Football Correspondent Mike Ingham, commentators Alan Green, Jonathan Pearce and John Murray, summariser Jimmy Armfield, presenter Mark Chapman and Guillem Balague, a journalist with the Spanish football magazine, Don Balon.
