Saudi Student Deported After Terror Acquittal Wed Jul 21, 2004 08:29 PM ET
BOISE, Idaho (Reuters) - Nearly five weeks after a jury acquitted him of charges of aiding terrorists, a Saudi Arabian computer science student has been deported from Idaho to Saudi Arabia, his attorney said on Wednesday.
Sami Al-Hussayen, 35, a computer science student at the University of Idaho, was released from an Idaho jail on Wednesday and was en route to Saudi Arabia, lawyer David Nevin said.
He was charged in March 2003 with three counts of aiding terrorist groups. Federal prosecutors argued Hussayen worked to raise money for Palestinian and Chechnya-based terror groups. Defense lawyers said Hussayen's work on a network of Islamic Web sites was volunteer help for charity and constitutionally protected free speech.
In an earlier ruling in a separate immigration action, a judge ordered Hussayen deported back home to Saudi Arabia. Hussayen, while in prison, last saw his wife and three children when they were deported from Idaho in March 2004.
"He hasn't hugged his family in a year and a half," Nevin said. The lawyer added he gave his client a calling card and a credit card and told him to call him once he got home.
Hussayen's arrest was one of a series nationwide in which the U.S. government sought to strengthen law enforcement efforts in what President Bush calls a "war on terror." Some human rights groups have complained of overzealous prosecutions.
