Al-Hilal claim title ^top
BRAZILIAN RENALDO missed a last minute penalty against Al-Jaish to hand Al-Hilal their first Arab Super Cup title.
Al-Hilal had won their match against Al-Safaqissi 4-1 but had to wait patiently on the outcome of the Al-Jaish and Al-Nasr clash before claiming their prize.
Al-Hilal showed their Jekyll and Hyde nature in the two halves against Al-Safaqissi. They went a goal down when Benza struck inside nine minutes. This prompted coach Safet Susic to make two changes before the half hour to try and turn around his team's performance, but this had little effect.
GOALKEEPER MOHAMMED AL-DEAYA'A was the man of the match as he single-handedly kept Al-Hilal in the game stopping at least three goals from Al-Safaqissi.
Al-Hilal looked a different outfit in the second half – they were well organized and leveled the scores in the 51st minute through Sami Al-Jaber and a minute later took the lead through Mohammed Al-Shalhoob.
Al-Hilal needed to score two more and were helped in their quest when Al-Safaqissi were reduced to 10 men after the dismissal of Yababa Malik in the 61st minute.
Roni scored Al-Hilal's third in the 85th minute from the spot and Sami Al-Jaber sealed the 4-1 win with the last kick of the match.
AL-JAISH AND Al-Nasr both had to win their match to clinch the title. Al-Nasr created early pressure but Al-Jaish defended bravely and took a surprise lead in the 45th minute.
Al-Nasr made two substitutions to start the second half and they proved successful as they leveled just four minutes after the restart through Fahd Al-Muhalal's header.
Al-Nasr continued to push forward but this time Al-Jaish answered back with dangerous attacking play and took a deserved lead in the 69th minute through Maher Al-Sayed. Al-Nasr were quick to reply, Muhsin Al-Harthi capitalising on a goalkeeping error in the 73rd minute.
Both teams chased the win right to the death and Al-Nasr looked as if they were to clinch the points and the title when they were awarded a penalty deep in stoppage time. But Brazilian Renaldo shot too close to the keeper who blocked the shot and Abdulrahman Al-Beeshi squandered the rebound, firing over the bar.
This result gave Al-Hilal the title on goal difference from Al-Nasr and Al-Jaish |
